STEVE EGGE
After growing up in Northern California and
graduating with a Secondary Teaching Credential from San Jose State College,
Steve worked for the next 10 years teaching troubled youth. His artistic
career began in 1978 after seeing a paper mache’ figure that a friend
brought back from Paris. Primarily self taught, he has honed his sculpting
skills over the past twenty years while also developing a process that
results in figures that are very durable, partially to fully moveable, and
extremely lifelike.
Early customers included
private collectors, museums and other public facilities. The museum
clientele included two of the Smithsonian Museums, as well as, numerous
military and aviation oriented facilities, and a large exhibit for Expo '86
in Vancouver, Canada. Look-alikes of historical figures and custom built
display creations eventually gave way to his real passion of creating fun
figures that have an endearing quality that leaves the viewer with a smile
and perhaps a desire to make the figure a part of their family. His figures
are often said to possess a “Norman Rockwell” type of charm that often sends
the newly initiated searching for a camera to capture their first
introduction on film.
Since 1992, Steve has
concentrated more heavily on a handful of Art Galleries to gain exposure and
a growing list of very satisfied customers who now own one or more of his
creations. Still insisting upon doing most, if not all, of the work himself
he has successfully managed to increase the number of figures produced
annually without compromising their exceptional quality. From the glass
eyes to the hair in the nose, his creations feature an attention to detail
and a realism that is usually found only in figures costing many hundreds,
if not thousands, of dollars more.
Steve and his wife
Patricia live in a hilltop home on five acres of property which affords them
wonderful views and an endless array of outdoor duties which they only
rarely complain about doing. Whether it be gardening, cutting wood for the
winter, or trying to stay one step ahead of the deer, they enjoy the
out-of-doors and almost everything that entails. Steve has played golf most
of his life and looks forward to the time he can play more than his busy
schedule now allows. An occasional day of skiing is also pretty high on his
list of great ways to spend a day when he is not in his studio creating. Surrounded by good friends and a loving wife, he looks forward to continuing
to put smiles on people’s faces and some long lasting fun into a lot of
people’s lives.
