DON LANGFORD
Don Langford in known for his impressionistic
landscapes and seascapes painted in oils. If there is a dominant theme in
much of his work, it is trees. He often paints the Cypress trees along the
Pacific Coast, Oaks and Sycamores in verdant meadows lf lupine and poppies
or clumps of Eucalyptus on California's rolling golden hills. He also paints
the season s in the Midwest and Eastern states.
He grew up in rural Missouri and started drawing and painting at an early
age. His pencil drawings and watercolors brought praise from teachers and
family. He later took an interest in photography, which proved valuable in
learning values, composition, light and shadow. After completing a military
stint in Asia, he studied briefly with Larry Kronquist of Laguna Beach
during the 1950's. Observing Kronquist as he mixed color, applied the paint
with brush and knife gave him the tools to continue painting on his own. The
years that followed saw him improve his technique and his ability to market
his work.
While spending many years in a banking career, he painted and taught classes
conducted demonstrations whenever possible. He and his family lived on the
Monterey Peninsula for seventeen years, creating a source of inspiration in
his work. When he became a statistic in banking due to mergers and
downsizing, he faced a "now or never" decision to fulfill his dream of being
a full-time artist. With unanimous support from his family, he began
painting full-time for several galleries.
He is a plein aire painter, an artist member of the California Art Club, and
is represented by galleries in Alexandria, Virginia, Laguna Beach, Los
Angeles, Palm Desert, San Diego, Temecula and Sacramento, California.
